Synopsis: An attorney who is not accepted by his pairs works on real estate and taxes to make money. As a neighbour son is enprisonned for subversion he decides to defend him. The story is based on a true story.
Review: I do not know much about the history of Korea. Korean war in the 50s, economic boom in the 90s and that is it. Via this movie, I learned a lot about the 80s and the military dictatorship. The story is and the history seems to be similar to what I know from South American dictatorships and the way Yang Woo-seok tells the story reminds me Costa Gavras. The dynamic of the struggle for life. The main actor is amazing (Song Kang-ho). The convinced capitalist and opportunist turns into a defender of civil rights just because he trusts the neighbour son and feels a moral debts toward his family. The main character motto is the often repeated "Do not give up". In the historical context, this sounds like the motto of a country against the military regime.
