Review: After two weaker seasons, I am glad to write that the fifth one is pretty good and very intense. The first few episodes are quite slow and remind of the previous season. Actually it seems like they are used to that purpose. But after that it is a succession of surprising events episode after episode, so much that the highlight of he season is not at all the last episode.
I was complaining about the previous seasons when the producers were too easily involving us in the story by hurting the characters that we have come to know and love. It is not different in this season (even worse!), but for some reason I found it better done, and only on two instances did I find it over the top. Maybe because we finally see Jax doing what we expect him to do since the first episodes of Season one. Also we start to feel the weight of the events of the previous seasons on the characters, this makes them more believable and human.
In season five we don't discover the past of some of the main characters but mostly focus on the present events which are already dense enough, in particular in relation with the character of Pope efficiently portrayed by Harold Perrineau. The rest of the cast is now very much at ease with their role, even if I am not always convinced by the performance of Hunnam.
I don't know which story it can be possible to tell after this intense season (although a few hints are given towards the end), but I have already pre-ordered the season six that I will get in September. It is known that Season seven will be the last for this series.
Rating: 7 /10
