Synopsis: After her husband dies, Marilou (Eugene Domingo) continues the barber shop. She has good reputation via the pastor (Eddie Garcia) and the major (Noni Buencamino). As the army of Marcos' dictatorship is looking for rebels, her situation is moved. | |
Review: After The Attorney showing the resistance against the military regime in South Korea, Barber's tales shows the resistance in the Philippines. Again well done, and again the main character is not communist. This time just a normal quite person wanting the best for her and her substitute family. A large part is given to present the quiet village life and the character of Marilou as a good person. The real resistance events are finally too short for me as more interesting to me. I would have preferred a shorter part on Marilou as several scenes show the same aspects of her personality. We find again a good Eddie Garcia (Boy golden) having the right tone, as Eugene Domingo. Other male actors are not convincing. Marilou's friends in the village are also convincing. The idea of this movie is great. A scenario stronger on the historical context would have enhanced the drama. The director is a promising talent. |

I don't have much to add to your good review. However for me it was a surprise to see a Drama of such quality coming from the Philippines. As you say the scope may not be broad enough (the fights occur only in the background) but I liked it like that. My rating: 7/10.
ReplyDeleteNote that Barber's Tales was the third best movie of the FEFF2014 according to the votes by the participants.
