Review: After watching Clerks 2 I wanted more of Kevin Smith. I had never seen his second movie Mallrats. It is not as excellent and original as his first one Clerks (you find many recurrent ideas and types of jokes in his movies) but if you like the style you will like Mallrats. You can find the usual nerdy guys, not really romantic and talking much more about video games, comics books and movies than sweet talking to their girlfriends. Jay and Silent Bob are there, as odd as usual. You can also find the whole American sub-culture of the malls. As very well said in the movie, those youngsters go to the mall to hang out, not shopping nor eating, just wasting time there, this is what mallrats are. I liked to see the apparitions of Michael Rooker, Ben Affleck (like in most Smith movies), Brian O'Halloran (playing Dante in the Clerks) and of Joey Lauren Adams, star of Chasing Amy. Also there is a funny cameo by cult comics book creator Stan Lee, and this is probably the first movie that used him as such, with the fan's reverence. Nowadays we catch glimpses of him in all the Marvel super-hero movies. Now I definitely have to watch again all of Kevin Smith's films. |
