Far East Film Festival 2014

After having prepared us and you for the Far East Film Festival from April 25th to May 3rd (link), JoRafCinema would like to share with you our experience of this film festival apart from all the movies.

After two rainy days in Treviso and Venice, I [Raf] arrived on Monday morning April 28th. Arriving in the Agriturismo Gon is always a good experience. I was at the border of the city of Udine and already had cows who would provide the milk, butter and cheese for the week.
I got the keys of the appartment and let the bags in. I got a bike to ride to the Teatro Nuovo under the Sun. I felt good! Then in the Teatro Nuovo I got my Black Dragon pass. I still had two hours until my first movie. Perfect to have lunch and prepare the list of movies to watch.
Alex arrived on Monday afternoon and has been again a good companion during the festival.
I [Jo] could only reach Udine on Wednesday late. But just in time to say hello to Luniaco and Regina, grab the room keys, the bike, and ride to the Teatro Nuovo to meet the others and enjoy the last movie of the day. I even had time for a beer and sandwiches at the bar of the theater, surrounded by familiar faces and very glad to be here, only five hours after I had left work.
Teatro Nuovo can seat 1200 people

Golgo 13: The Kowloon Assignment (1977)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 1977
Director: Yukio Noda
Actors: Shin'ichi Chiba (Kill Bill, Bullet Train), Lun Chia, Etsuko Shihomi
Country: J, HK
Genre: Action, Polar
Conditions of visioning: 26.05.2013, DVD, 11" computer screen
Synopsis: Golgo 13 (Chiba), the best assassin in the world, is hired by the syndicate to kill a drug kingpin. After some initial killings, Detective Smith (Chia) is put in charge of the case and intends tracking down the killer.
Review: I acquired this movie in the same box-set as Virus and The Bullet Train that I have also watched recently. I have learned after watching the movie that it is adapted from a famous manga, actually the oldest still in production. This movie is actually the second adaptation, after a simply entitled Golgo 13 which was not starring Sonny Chiba.
The franchise deals with this super-assassin of unknown origins (reminding me a bit of another manga: City Hunter), especially famous for his impossible sniper shots. We do see a few in the movie, in particular the last one which is particularly unrealistic.
I was surprised that most of the story of this James Bond ersatz takes place in Hong-Kong, and Chiba is one of the few Japanese characters. Indeed it was disturbing to see American spies and the Hong-Kong police dubbed in Japanese, as I watched the movie in its original release language!
The story is not really special. The only interesting aspect I found is the character of Golgo 13 a.k.a. Duke Togo, hired by the Syndicate (the Mob) but having a sense of honor (defending women and the weak...). He is played marvellously by Sonny Chiba, sparsely speaking but having what is rightfully described in the movie as Razor eyes. In this movie he has the lead role unlike in Virus of The Bullet Train, and I can understand what Tarantino loved in him and wanted to offer him a role in Kill Bill. He also fights well and there are a couple of good fight scenes throughout the movie.

Sons of Anarchy - Season 5 (2012)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2012
Creator: Kurt Sutter
Actors: Charlie Hunnam (Children of Men, Pacific Rim), Katey Sagal (Married with Children TV-series), Ron Perlman (Blade 2, Hellboy 1-2), Mark Boone Junior (Memento), Kim Coates (Black Hawk Down), Tommy Flanagan (Gladiator), Danny Trejo (Machete), Harold Perrineau (Matrix 2-3)
Country: USA
Genre: Drama, Polar
Conditions of visioning: May 2014, Blu-ray, Home cinema
Synopsis: Strong of his new powers and responsibilities, Jax (Hunnam) tries to realize the vision he has for the Motorcycle Club but there are many obstacles on his way, starting with Clay (Perlman).
Review: After two weaker seasons, I am glad to write that the fifth one is pretty good and very intense. The first few episodes are quite slow and remind of the previous season. Actually it seems like they are used to that purpose. But after that it is a succession of surprising events episode after episode, so much that the highlight of he season is not at all the last episode.
I was complaining about the previous seasons when the producers were too easily involving us in the story by hurting the characters that we have come to know and love. It is not different in this season (even worse!), but for some reason I found it better done, and only on two instances did I find it over the top. Maybe because we finally see Jax doing what we expect him to do since the first episodes of Season one. Also we start to feel the weight of the events of the previous seasons on the characters, this makes them more believable and human.
In season five we don't discover the past of some of the main characters but mostly focus on the present events which are already dense enough, in particular in relation with the character of Pope efficiently portrayed by Harold Perrineau. The rest of the cast is now very much at ease with their role, even if I am not always convinced by the performance of Hunnam.
I don't know which story it can be possible to tell after this intense season (although a few hints are given towards the end), but I have already pre-ordered the season six that I will get in September. It is known that Season seven will be the last for this series.

Ödipussi (1988)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 1988
Director: Loriot
Actors: Loriot, Evelyn Hamann, Katharina Brauren
Country: D
Genre: Comedy
Conditions of visioning: 23.05.2014, DVD, OV
Synopsis: Gray-haired furniture retailer Paul Winkelmann (Loriot) still has his dinner cooked and his laundry done by his mother (Brauren). He spends his evenings playing Scrabble with Mama's friends and discussing the role of women in society in his carnival club. When he meets psychologist Margarete Tietze (Hamann), "Pussi" finally begins to rebel against his dominant mother.
Review: The humour of Loriot motivated me to watch this movie. I knew his sketches of dry humour. The movie is also dry and misses rythm and suspense. There are some nice episodes that look like Loriot sketches. But many flaws where nothing happens and where the dialogues and the acting are flat.
In the DVD there is also a talk of Loriot for the Premiere in East-Berlin! Amazing what he dared to say. That during that event thousands of people were missing their duty of good socialist citizen by not producing anything. That was great! Unfortunately I did not found this video on internet.

Good (2008)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2008
Director: Vicente Amorim
Actors: Viggo Mortensen (The two faces of January, A history of violence), Jason Isaacs
Country: GB, D
Genre: Drama
Conditions of visioning: 24.05.2014, Bluray, OV
Synopsis: John Halder (Mortensen) is a 'good' and decent individual with family problems: a neurotic wife, two demanding children and a mother suffering from senile dementia... and a Jewish friend (Isaacs). As a literary professor, Halder explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Seemingly inconsequential decisions lead to choices, which lead to more choices...
Review: The original concept is similar to the German movie Die Welle. Anybody can become a Nazi. Nazi are not born idiots or madmen. Millions of "good" people did not see nor believe that the masses of people could be wrong and bad. "-Anything that makes people happy can't be bad, can it?" . And then the power drives the Good even worse using the fear of authority. The story by C.P. Taylor and its adaption by John Wrathall are excellent.
The acting of Mortensen is again convincing as a man confused by his context (family, friend, new woman, book burning). But something does not work. I do not know what. I did not feel involved. Maybe because the directing did not dare showing the violence and absurdity of events: Kristallnacht, War, Final Solution.

Casse-tête chinois (2014)

Also Known As: Beziehungsweise New-York, Chinese puzzle
Year of first release: 2014
Director: Cédric Klapisch
Actors: Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Cécile de France, Kelly Reilly
Country: F, B
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Conditions of visioning: 14.05.2014, Schauburg, OV
Synopsis: Xavier (Duris) is a  40-year-old father. His life is complicated when the mother Wendy (Reilly) of his two children moves to New York. Since he can't bear them growing up far away from him, he decides to move there as well. His lesbian friend Isabelle (de France) is living there already.
Review: We follow some of the characters of  the Erasmus student comedy L'auberge espagnole and Poupées russes. But it is not necessary to know the previous movies. It is a quite good picture of the people having been 40 in the years 2000. The trend being different now. So not so modern, but still touching as everybody has friends having kids, getting divorced, educating her/his kids alone. I found it very modern in the question of lesbian having a baby and of asking a friend to donate for that.
"-Life is complicated. -But it's life." This dialogue comes at the perfect time in the movie and depicts the whole story. Even if you think your life is complicated, everyone's life is complicated. So just take it! The story telling alternating real life and explaining life to the editor gives a good rythm. And indeed the chassé-croisé of people, ex-wife and ex-girlfriend and all the kids, gives a lot of rythm on top. There are lot of ideas and thoughts about what makes maturity of being 40, about giving a second chance after a long time, about tricks to achieve one's goals in the modern society, about tolerance and intolerance.

The two faces of January (2014)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2014
Director: Hossein Amini
Actors: Viggo Mortensen (A history of violence), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia, Spiderman)
Country: GB, USA, F
Genre: Thriller
Conditions of visioning: 19.05.2014, Schauburg, OV sneak preview
Synopsis: Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his wife Colette (Dunst) are in Athen for holidays. They meet Rydal (Isaac), a guy starring at Colette at different places. They will be forced to move together and both men discover unexpected faces of the other.
Review: The story, the camera and the lights work so that the conflicts involving jalousy, greed, honesty, loyalty, love arrive all insiduously. Isaac is convincing in the role of swindler and later of swindled by just changing a bit the face and the look. In this ambivalence of people the story is interesting. Dunst is as usual beautiful and not acting. She stands well. I hope she will do once a role more demanding.

Locke (2013)

Also Known As: No turning back
Year of first release: 2013
Director: Steven Knight
Actors: Tom Hardy (Inception, The dark knight rises)
Country: GB
Genre: Thriller
Conditions of visioning: 12.05.2014, Schauburg, OV sneak preview
Synopsis: Ivan Locke, a dedicated family man and successful construction manager, receives a phone call on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career that sets in motion a series of events that threaten his careful cultivated existence.
Review: The first half of the movie is full of suspense even if it is first surprising to have one actor only on the screen. There are several stakes, on the job, on family and on his personal story. The last third was disappointing because these stories deflate unexpectedly.
The light effects of the camera, the controlled glare and reflections were amazing. Even if it does not necessarily brings much to the story. The acting of Tom Hardy is very good as he switches from one feeling to another often trying to control and calm himself. Very convincing even if the acting is given only by the face. Very promising movie, director and actor.

Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1980 (2009)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2009
Director: James Marsh
Actors: Warren Clarke, Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum), James Fox
Country: GB
Genre: Drama, Polar
Conditions of visioning: 20.05.2014, DVD, 11" computer screen
Synopsis: Police officer Peter Hunter (Considine) is put in charge of the internal investigation on the Yorkshire police department that has been failing in catching a women's serial killer for four year.
Review: After Red Riding 1974 I was eager to see this second movie of the trilogy, produced on the same year for the British television. This one is more centered on the police than on journalists, but like the first one it starts with an investigation but then leaves it aside to focus more on characters. It is again very realistic and very dark.
The main character is shown as a police officer beyond reproach, in contrast with the police force he is investigating and that we know from the first movie to be corrupted. But slowly we see his human side, and this is very well done. During the first part of the movie we follow the investigation and we believe that he will manage to catch the killer while unveiling the truth about the police department at the same time, but finally the investigation becomes just an excuse for studying and displaying the reactions of this extraordinary character when facing the real world filled with jealousy, hatred, greed, corruption...
Again, not a good advertisement for the British Yorkshire of the 70's-80's. I am starting to wish for a happy ending of the third movie (Red Riding 1984), but I am not sure I will get it.

The Bullet Train (1975)

Also Known As: Shinkansen daibakuha (original)
Year of first release: 1975
Director: Jun'ya Satô
Actors:  Ken Takakura (47 Ronin), Shin'ichi Chiba (Kill Bill), Kei Yamamoto
Country: J
Genre: Action
Conditions of visioning: 20.05.2014, DVD, 11" computer screen, English dubbing
Synopsis: Terrorists place a bomb onboard a high speed train, that will go off if it slows down below 80 km/h.
Review: I bought this movie as part of a Sonny Chiba action pack (picture below) from which I wanted only Virus (a.k.a.Day of Resurrection), Americano-Japanese disaster movie that has been in my mind since I was a kid, and that is presented at its best in this package (full-length and good image quality).
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of The Bullet Train. It seems like the package is an interesting sample of Japanese movies of that period and I will probably watch the third movie Golgo 13 (a spy movie) soon. I bought in the USA another Sonny Chiba package containing The Bodyguard and Sister Street Fighting but after watching only a few minutes it was clear that it was of much poorer quality. For those who don't know, Sonny Chiba is this Japanese actor that was made famous worldwide for his role of Swordmaker in Kill Bill, only after a very long and prosperous local career.
The story of The Bullet Train must have inspired the one of Speed with Keanu Reeves, and I also saw similarities with Unstoppable that I reviewed recently, although that one is supposed to be based on recent events.
The movie is quite good and interesting, showing the expected scenes one after the other (slowing down the train to gain time, transferring material or people from one train to another running in parallel, avoiding another train on a collision course, an accident on the tracks...), but with an added Japanese sensibility (the terrorist is not presented as a bad guy).
I found the movie a bit long and slow (although I saw the international cut and not the Japanese one which is half an hour longer), and not very exciting when it comes to people reacting with one another. Probably not very appealing to modern western audiences, but satisfying for a curious cinephile like me.
The English dubbing is not so bad and maybe even helps enjoying the movie.

Barbecue (2014)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2014
Director: Eric Lavaine
Actors: Lambert Wilson, Florence Foresti, Frank Dubosc, Guillaume de Tonquédec, Lionel Abelanski, Sophie Duez
Country: F
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Conditions of visioning: 09.05.2014, Pathé Orléans
Synopsis: For his 50 years, Antoine got an infarctus as a present. The doctor says he should be more carful. But he lived carefully all his life, care of his health, care of the food, care of his family. care of accepting his friends as they are. Now, he wants to make a special diet.
Review: In one week in France, I had to watch at least one French movie. French movies are quite rare in German movie theaters. The plot is typically French. A group of friends talking about life. Here in particular about the way they live their mid-life crisis: separation from partner, distance from partner or friends, different ways of friendship. Nothing very original, but funny and interesting.
The acting of Lambert Wilson and Florence Foresti is very good and convincing. Their roles take also more volume along the movie than the other roles. Especially the pronounciation by and the eloquence of Lambert Wilson are remarkable. Surprising is the quiet role of Frank Dubosc. The other roles get smaller and smaller so that the actors cannot really show anything. The directing does not show much originality but satisfies the goals of showing properly the characters.

Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974 (2009)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2009
Director: Julian Jarrold
Actors: Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spiderman 1-2), David Morrissey, John Henshaw, Sean Bean (Cleanskin, Black Death)
Country: GB
Genre: Drama, Polar
Conditions of visioning: 20.05.2014, DVD, 11" computer screen
Synopsis: A young journalist investigates the serial murder of little girls. In the British Yorkshire of the 70's, he enters a world of secrets and corruption.
Review: Some years ago I had read some good about this movie in the Mad Movies magazine, in spite of it being a TV-film. It is indeed a dark and complex polar of very good quality, that can easily compete against many American average polars and thrillers.
The title immediately made me think of the excellent Korean Memories of Murder, while in fact I have learnd that the Ridings refer to different jurisdictions in the Yorkshire region in the UK. The trilogy is fact adapted from David Peace's novels, themself fictions revolving around true events.
Andrew Garfield plays the best role I have even seen him in, he is very convincing. The other actors, including Sean Bean, are also very good. But the strongest point is definitely the story. The criminal investigation quickly give way to a fight for the truth, (light spoilers, highlight to read) against corruption and powerful people that seem to be able to buy the right to do anything at that period in time. And the ending is not what you would expcect.
The story is twisted and not what you could usually expect from a Polar, especially not one made for television. This continues to prove that the British movie making industry is in good health (to me at least) and can deliver a kind of story that could not be told anywhere else.
I struggled understanding some details because of the strong British accents in the movie. I didn't have access to sub-titles but I would advise anybody to watch this trilogy with them if they are not native English speakers.
I am now very eager to see what the two following movies of the trilogy have to deliver: Red Riding 1980 and Red Riding 1984.

The Darkest Hour (2011)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2011
Director: Chris Gorak (various posts on Minority Report, Fight Club and Blade Trinity)
Actors: Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild, Killer Joe, Speed Racer), Olivia Thirlby (Dredd), Max Minghella (The Social Network), Rachael Taylor (Transformers)
Country: USA
Genre: SF
Conditions of visioning: 15.05.2014, HD VOD, Home cinema, 2D
Synopsis: While on a trip to Moscow, two friends (Hirsch & Minghella) end up being part of the few survivors to an alien attack.
Review: This is an American movie but taking place in Moskow and produced by the Russian Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Wanted), which is one of the reasons for which I wanted to watch it: this guy really has a taste for strong visual effects.
I liked the design of the aliens (all invisible) and the effect they have on leaving creatures when they touch them: to vaporize them in a swirling cloud of ash, reminding of Spielberg's War of the Worlds. The fact that they are given away because they activate light bulbs on their path doesn't make mush sense (why being invisible if you can be found easily like that?!?) but is obviously here to give a chance to the young bunch of humans to fight back.
Unfortunately the story brings no surprise at all, it is very linear, full of holes, and the actors are average. I would be tempted to rate it higher because I like the genre of Alien Invasion movies, but I should rather watch again World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles, even if that one is more focused on the military rather than on normal people like The Darkest Hour tries to do.

Godzilla (2014)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2014
Director: Gareth Edwards (Monsters)
Actors: Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass 1-2), Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche
Country: USA
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Conditions of visioning: 14.05.2014, CINEMA theater, digital 3D
Synopsis: Ford Brody (Taylor-Johnson) lost his mother (Binoche) when we was young due to a nuclear reactor meltdown in Japan. His father (Cranson) became obsessed with this event that he believes to have a non natural cause. Fifteen years later he records data showing the same event could happen again.
Review: Many years ago I have seen the original Godzilla which was shot in 1954 in Black & White, looks cheap and overplayed, but has something interesting to it. No wonder it is the father of all monster movies. Since then I have seen the latest of the Japanese Godzilla movies entitled Final Wars (2004). It was nice to watch but stupid and cheap, trying to use partly American cast. Two years ago I watched again the Godzilla by Roland Emmerich (1998). I find it OK but too much adapted to the American taste, with its mix of Action and Comedy, not really paying homage to its creature. Even the design of it looks "friendly", like if it had a smile on its face.
The director of this new non-Japanese Godzilla was undoubtedly chosen because of his excellent Monsters in which he was showing how to produce a good monsters movie for a low budget by giving a great importance to his characters. The decision to produce Godzilla movie was also motivated by the recent release of Pacific Rim.
After this long introduction, what do I think about the new Godzilla? Well I think it is much much closer to the original spirit of the Godzilla series than the 1998 version was. The comparison can be made with the King Kong movies: The story of the original (1933) was largely changed for the 1978 version, but Peter Jackson made in 2005 a true homage.
You can recognize in this Godzilla the style of Gareth Edwards Monsters, i.e. you stay very close to the characters and see the creatures only progressively, often they fight off-screen, and only in the end you get to see them in all their splendor. While this is an interesting choice, it can be frustrating, but unlike in Pacific Rim where you had several monsters, here you cannot show Godzilla fighting the same enemy several times., that would have been too redundant.
The side story suffers from the World War Z syndrome, i.e. the hero happens to be every time at the right location where shit happens. In order to show something more than just a movie in which creatures fight, there is a family story which seems forced and suffers from many ellipses. Although I liked the editing of the creature scenes, I disliked the one of the family scenes (except for the introductory one which was good).
To conclude on a positive note, I have to say that I loved the design of Godzilla looking exactly like he did back in 1954, except that the digital effects gave a lot of character to the beast where a man in a rubber suit couldn't really.

Game of Thrones - Season 3 (2013)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2013
Creators: David Benioff, D.B. Weiss
Actors: Peter Dinklage (Xmen: Days of a Future Past), Lena Headey (300, Dredd), Emilia Clarke (Terminator: Genesis)
Country: USA
Genre: Fantasy
Conditions of visioning: April-May 2014, Blu-ray, Home cinema
Synopsis: The war for the control of the Iron Throne rages on.
Review: Once again I will assume that the reader of this post has seen the previous seasons, so I don't need to warn about spoilers.
The season starts in the same spirit as the previous one, i.e. very slow and with lots of dialogs but then I appreciated the epic episodes 3 and 4, in which many events take place and we finally see Daeneris gaining some power. Episodes 5 to 8 make you want to see more and more, except for the torture scenes that I don't like. And then you have episode 9: if 3 and 4 were epic, what is this one?!? Maybe the most surprising since the death of Ned Stark. As it was done once on the Blu-ray of the first season, this episode is presented in a mode called "Anatomy of an episode", which is better than a commentary because not only the director, cast and crew speak while you watch the episode, but it is also interrupted by pieces of interview, behind-the-scenes footage, and other making-of elements. Very interesting.
The intricate story is still filled with well-developed characters, and the sets and the special effects are as good-looking as usual. So in summary, the stakes are going increasingly and the story gets more captivating after a slow second season. But what bothers me more and more is that I would like that the many separate groups in the story converge faster together. This only starts to happen towards the last episodes, but actually after some more separated groups were created. I would really like to see some progress, and have less the feeling that the series will go on forever. This is something I often reproach to TV-series (actually it is not too much the case in Sons of Anarchy).
Note that in the light of that season, I have revised my ratings on the two first ones. Season 1 went from 8 to 7/10 (the extra point was for the surprise effect, now I am over it) and Season 2 went from 6 to 5/10, because it was really too slow, and now I can rate Season 3 right between the first two.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2013
Director: Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder, The Cable Guy)
Actors: Ben Stiller (Zoolander, Dodgeballs), Kristen Wiig (Paul), Jon Daly
Country: USA
Genre: Comedy, Adventure
Conditions of visioning: 11.05.2014, HD VOD, Home cinema
Synopsis: Walter Mitty (Stiller) is often daydreaming, until one day he has the opportunity to embark on a real adventure.
Review: This is not the usual dumb comedy with Ben Stiller, and in fact he directed this movie. The odd events that occur when he is daydreaming, and that are already shown in the trailer, are what tries to attract the viewer, but finally those moments are few and the humor is somewhere else. It is still offbeat as Stiller likes but more subtle, more in the details like guys that look weird with a beard, or the super-adventurer character of the photographer played by Sean Penn, or walter Mitty doing some great skateboard stunts off-screen.
The movie is filled wih nice images and landscape. It is a kind of invitation to travel, which appears to be at first the main message of the movie, while in fact this message is: live your life, or as the poster says: Stop dreaming, start living.
Unfortunately the movie is not really funny, unrealistic enough so that it is hard to identify with the characters, and overall is too slow and too long (I don't think it required 2 hours).
Fun fact: it is the remake of a 1947 movie, which reminds me of The Great Gatsby, another old story adapted to nowadays' tastes with the help of large amounts of special affects.

My pretend girlfriend (2014)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2014
Director: Yakumo Saiji
Actors: Hayami Akari, Takeushi Taro, Kudo Asuka, Ishibashi Anna
Country: J
Genre: Romance
Conditions of visioning: 03.05.2014, Teatro nuovo, FEFF2014
Synopsis: Momone (Hayami Akari) had an affair with Miyazaki (Kudo Asuka) and to cover it in front of the official girlfriend Tetsuko (Ishibashi Anna), Noboru (Takeuchi Taro) is asked to be a fake boyfriend to Momone. She will become his first love.
Review: The plot is interesting but the story itself does not go much further than that. The double dates and when the guys are together are scenes particularly empty of story. Maybe there is a sense in it, but I did not understood it.
The acting is quite good especially the one of Momone. Nevertheless not much happens and when something happens in the dialogue between the two guys, the confidence part is coming from nowhere. The dialogues between Momone and Noboru are good. The scene of Momone and Noboru on the roof and outside town are particularly well directed for the picture and the dialogues. The rest has not much content, so that out of 109 minutes, this could have been much shorter.

Barber's tales (2014)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 2014
Director: Jun Robles Lana
Actors: Eugene Domingo, Eddie Garcia, Noni Buencamino
Country: RP
Genre: Drama
Conditions of visioning: 02.05.2014, Teatro nuovo, FEFF2014
Synopsis: After her husband dies, Marilou (Eugene Domingo) continues the barber shop. She has good reputation via the pastor (Eddie Garcia) and the major (Noni Buencamino). As the army of Marcos' dictatorship is looking for rebels, her situation is moved.
Review: After The Attorney showing the resistance against the military regime in South Korea, Barber's tales shows the resistance in the Philippines. Again well done, and again the main character is not communist. This time just a normal quite person wanting the best for her and her substitute family. A large part is given to present the quiet village life and the character of Marilou as a good person. The real resistance events are finally too short for me as more interesting to me. I would have preferred a shorter part on Marilou as several scenes show the same aspects of her personality. We find again a good Eddie Garcia (Boy golden) having the right tone, as Eugene Domingo. Other male actors are not convincing. Marilou's friends in the village are also convincing.
The idea of this movie is great. A scenario stronger on the historical context would have enhanced the drama. The director is a promising talent.
