Review: Philippines produced many movies in the 60s and this one is styled as in the Manila of the 60s full of gangs and probably not in the same way as in that time. The story is basic and the acting as well. The story and directing are entertaining not nothing special nor original. One thing disturbed me all along the movie is the Photoshoped faces of the two main characters (Arturo "Boy Golden" Porcuna and Maria "Marla Dee" de Guzman), far much smoother than the other ones. So smoother that it looks like a low quality JPEG. Compared to older Philippines movies (Resiklo, A casket for rent) this one does not look so cheap in the form but cheaper in the content. |

Boy golden (2013)

At the beginning I thought the movie would have a kind of offbeat humour, because of the excessive make-up of the characters, and the recurrent allusions to Elvis Presley. In particular I found it funny that a gang brings a letter to another gang while dancing to the music of Blue Suede Shoes.
ReplyDeleteBut then nothing happens, the scenes are slow and there aren't any stakes, so much that I fell asleep before the end. My rating: 1/10.
