Review: After Daredevil, Jessica Jones is the second TV-series taking place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and was also produced by the Netflix VOD giant. It does also take place in a New York City that was ravaged by the aborted Alien invasion of The Avengers, but it refers to this event only once in the whole season. In fact a bit more reference is actually rather made to Daredevil towards the end, thanks to the temporary presence of a common character.
Jessica Jones has an interesting story less relying on special powers and more on the characters' feelings, which makes me think it is targeted more towards a female audience, were it only for the fact that the series holds many strong female characters in addition to the main one: her friend Trish, the victim Hope and the lesbian lawyer Jeri Hogarth played by Carrie-Anne Moss quite at ease in that role, of cold-blooded lawyer I mean. Those women are accompanied by a few males: an enigmatic mountain of muscles played by Mike Colter, the cop Will and the bad guy Killgrave. The background story of the characters is developed thanks to flashbacks as often in such TV format.
The series becomes a bit more interesting in its second half when Jessica's Nemesis is revealed, although I found the tricks they play each other tiring after a while. The series is pretty well done but it didn't make me an addict, and I watched the whole season only for the sake of completion. Again, it may be more adapted to a female audience, which is not a stupid choice from the producers as half of the potential audience is from that sex, and probably also want to see some super-hero action. Now there is some for everybody!
