Review: After watching this second season I have decided to raise the rating of the first one which I had unfairly set to 6/10 while it deserved a solid 7/10. In comparison, this second one starts slowly and the super-evil character of the Kingpin Wilson Fisk that I loved in the first season (magnificent Vincent D'Onofrio) sadly lacks this time.
The season does include the luxury of two new strong gifted characters but no really identifiable villain which made it a bit less attractive to me. So we soon discover the British-speaking Mexican business woman Elektra played by the French-Cambodian Elodie Yung whom I fell in love with. The character was already present and played by Jennifer Gardner both in the 2004 Daredevil movie with Ben Affleck and a spin-off called Elektra which I read was catastrophic. I guarantee that you will like this one better. The second is Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher, set on a bloody quest for the revenge on his wife and children's killers. For me this character will forever be Dolf Lundgren in the 1989 The Punisher, and not Thomas Jane from the quickly forgotten 2004 Punisher with John Travolta, but I have to admit that Jon Bernthal does a pretty good job at it in this season of Daredevil.
Both Elektra and the Punisher have very different values from the ones of Matt Murdock which creates some interesting tension and confrontations. And on a separate story it is interesting to follow the evolution of Karen, victim in the first season then assistant lawyer, and in this season bending towards (spoiler, highlight to read) journalism, following the footsteps of Ben Urich that she admired.
This second season is as well made as the first but I liked it less, maybe because the discovery effect is passed. Also as already mentioned I missed a strong villain, I found the efforts of Daredevil too dispersed and his motivations less clear, I didn't understand the reaction of the characters sometimes, and most of all I found the ending anti-climactic. It could have been graphically much stronger, I pictured it in my head as I watched the last episode and was thus disappointed by what I saw.
It is still a good TV-series and I will watch eagerly the third season if it ever comes to light.
Rating: 5 /10
