Synopsis: Daniel Daréus (Nyqvist), successful international conductor, interrupts his career after an heart attack and returns alone to his childhood village in Norrland, in the far north of Sweden. It doesn't take long before he is asked to come and listen to the fragment of a church choir, which practises every Thursday in the parish hall. Just come along and give a little bit of good advice. He can't say no, and from that moment, nothing in the village is the same again. The choir develops and grows. He makes both friends and enemies. | |
Review: I watched this movie as a recommendation. As I knew already Nyqvist from the Girl with the dragon tattoo trilogy and the movie had been announced as a dramatic comedy, I was curious. The story is very touching, especially because it deals with awaking the feelings of a previously conservative community via music. It is soon clear which romance will start, even with the other film posters. Many of the side stories are also clear but the tension comes from this precisely. The viewer knows where it is going but we do not know when. When each one will free oneself. When will the village break their law of silence. And when this happens, I felt freed myself. The acting of Nyqvist and Hallgren and all the village is very authentic and makes the whole story credible. Except the sometimes exaggerated role of the pastor Stig. The picture is a bit wonky and the lights sparse on many close-ups. But this could be put on the screen quality. |
