Synopsis: The adventures of the young girl Sawa (Sako) trying to survive by slightly abusing old men.
Review: A duration of 196 minutes for a Japanese movie is usually more than enough excuse for me to skip it, but the exception of Love Exposure tought me that such movie should be tested. I was glad to go see 0.5 mm at the FEFF and in the end find it only about 20 minutes too long. The encounters between the girl (nice Sakura Andô, present at the FEFF to promote the movie) and the five elderly and always tainted with Black Humour and a small dose of perversion: they all try to sleep or bathe with her, watch her shower and undress or grab a feel. Those guys (older than 70) are all touching each in their own way. The format of the movie is original: a succession of encounters with elderly unrelated to each other, and used to illustrate the Aging of the Japanese population.
Indeed we get to spend time (through Sawa) sharing the day-to-day routine with those guys who have lived so much and went through so many events. This conclusion (and the reason behind the title of the movie) are explained to us in the only lengthy scene of the movie.
One should not try to find a meaning in everything shown in 0.5 mm, but it was surely pleasant to watch a simple story put into images. I was also amazed to see how many scenes revolved around food (the girl is cooking for the old guys in exchange for lodging) and after more than three hours of that, I was only too eager to go to eat Asian food at our usual retreat: The Asian Wok (Via Manin 10, Udine).
Rating: 6 /10
