Review: Since the Dogma movies in the 1990s many Danish movies tend to be melodramatic and specially by showing untold family secrets (Festen, Antichrist). In this melodrama there is no dead but a dying man, one adultere, one untold child. The rythm in which the quest of Jacob is very well balanced and everything looks realistic, thanks to the balanced story telling, the acting and the techniques used for the cinematography reminding the Dogma style. Even if Mikkelsen appears in too many Danish movies in this one he is good. Knudsen and Lassgård are as usual excellent. I like this style developped in the Nouvelle Vague and later on in the Dogma movements. A pity that it is not used more often. After the wedding, even if no Dogma movie has a similar cinematography and sound that make it rich and closer to the emotional level of my perception. |
