Synopsis: In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army in the mountain pass of Thermopylae. 300 militaries from Sparta lead by Leonidas (Butler) and some support against the massive Persian army of Xerxes.
Review: Even if it is based on the real battle of Thermopylae themovie tries to translate cinematographically the graphic novell by Frank Miller. Therefore the realism of the scenery is far less important than the realism of the battle scenes. And this worked. The lights, the special effects (scenery, sky, blood) give an impression of not being real. The special monsters might look a bit different but they transmit the same fear or suspicion. They are real persons with masks and make-up (so the bonus) and are really well done. As it is a story just about bravery, the acting is limited to that.
Rating: 6 /10

  1. Zack Snyder made a big impression in 2004 with his first movie, the successful original remake of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. After that the adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel 300 seems like a rehearsal to the much more ambitious adaptation of an even more impressive comics: Watchmen.
In both those movies I found that the best parts were coming from the original material, while I found that the added value (dialogs, sound effects, music) were not up to the task and lacked the dynamism that the graphic novel was able to convey with static images. Only the slow motions, characteristic of this movie and pulling it towards the static form of a comics, stayed on people's mind and were copied many times since.
Although I loved the movie the first time, successive viewings diminishes its interest, so my rating would also be 6/10.
Note that if you like it, you will also like the kind of sequel 300: Rise of an Empire.
