Review: I didn't research the topic, but it looks to me like the comics book from which the movie is adapted was written as a kind of parody to the rest of the Marvel Universe. If it is the case, then the movie tries hard to respect this spirit and partially succeeds. The characters we meet throughout the movie are exaggeratedly colorful (all kinds of skin color and body shape) so are their reactions and the locations (city planet, asteroids, city built in the skull of a giant animal), without forgetting the reference to Terrian technology and culture (the soundtrack contains many songs form the 50-60's).
This whole mix could have led to something awful to watch like John Carter, but turns out to be OK. The special effects are very good-looking and some jokes/situations funny, the movie often plays with contrast between different characters for comedy effect, like between the invincible bad guy and the wannabe legendary outlaw that listens to a tape player with orange headsets. It is also funny that two actors known for their physique play CGI characters that look nothing like them: Vin Diesel plays a walking tree and Bradley Cooper a genius raccoon!
It is pure coincidence that I watched the movie on the day after watching Super, the previous movie by the same director James Gunn. It also explains why I found the same actors: Michael Rooker and Gregg Henry (that I have also seen in Payback on the same day as Super!!). This director nowplays  in the big league and made a long way since he went to the Troma school. By the way, for those who know him, don't miss the cameo by Lloyd Kaufman, creator of the independent movie company Troma and director of The Toxic Avenger.
But in the end and maybe because of the comedy, I didn't feel really involved in the movie, even during the battle that leads to the final confrontation. Definitely not as involved as when you see Luke Skywalker about the blow up the Death star in - the reference - Star Wars. A sequel is already announced anyway.
Rating: 5 /10
