Synopsis: Four couples meet for a dinner. As they discuss about the comet currently passing over their heads, the power goes down.
Review: The movie is based on a concept that could have been the synopsis for an episode of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits TV-series, including its simplistic scientific explanation that I will not dare criticize. In that it reminds me of Primer by Shane Carruth, also the fruit of the collaboration between a bunch of friends. Coherence stands the stretch to a full-length feature thanks to interesting visual choices and to many crispy twists in the story.
The visual choices revolve around the fact that the movie was shot with a Canon 5D consumer (or rather 'prosumer') digital camera (like Rubber was) as can be seen in the small and sharp depth of focus, but also unfortunately in the noisy and striped images during 2-3 dark scenes. The focus is often missing the faces of the actors, but this might have been done on purpose to create a realistic atmosphere during the dinner (this is also why the characters often all speak at once, like we do in real life). The fact that the camera is relatively small also helps moving it easily around the table.
I liked to see again Nicholas Brendon that I remember from Buffy. At first I thought the reactions of the characters were exaggerated (typical American I told myself), but then at the end it finds an explanation.
As I had read in the Mad Movies magazine, a nice surprise.
Rating: 8 /10

  1. I have added at the end of the article a poster that I like and that is more in the spirit of the movie.
