Review: It is not often that I watch a French comedy, especially in a German cinema, but this one was very successful in France so I guessed it could be a good idea to watch with with friends in the old theater that is the Theatiner Kino. Let me start with what I usually don't like in this kind of movie (and this one is no exception): 1) the situations and reactions of the characters are NOT realistic, and 2) I always have the feeling that young French actors read too much their text and don't play well enough. But OK, I have to accept at least the first item when I watch such a movie. And the second item is mitigated by the presence of the very natural Chantal Lauby (whose character named one of her daughters Odile of course) and the clown Christian Clavier whose play reminds sometimes of Jacquouille from Les Visiteurs. So the movie plays with the contrast between the parents and the sons-in-law, and the first half is a succession of comic situations based on the prejudice of one person against other groups or religions. It was of course largely exaggerated by I laughed. I liked much better the second half in which the rhythm slows down and we focus more on the feelings of the characters, which does not prevent very funny scenes, but I found the balance was better in this second half. I was pleased to learn that the director's first movie was Les Parasites that I enjoyed a lot watching 10 years ago. |
