Review: A thriller with teenagers would normally not interest me, but this one won the price of the critic at the NIFFF2014 and I read some good about it. There are no plans yet to release it in any Country this year so you can really see it only at Festivals. It is the kind of movie shot in a simple and realistic way and based on an idea worthy of an episode of The Twilight Zone, reminding me of Coherence also seen at the MFFF2014. But instead of a dinner with adult shot from very close with a Canon 5D, here we have more experimental shots of teenagers doing what teenagers do: talking, playing with their phones, watching TV...
The introduction of Jay's curse in their world is thus disturbing, especially thanks to the utterly simple way it works: a 'spirit' walks towards you under human shape (of somebody you know or like, naked or dressed, bloody or not) and you die if it touches you. I am convinced I heard about this plot already in the past but cannot remember if it was for another movie or a preview of that one. So the movie is spent following those youngsters running away from the curse and thinking about ways to get rid of it. I found it well done (although unrealistic) that the movie avoids the usual scenes of disbelief from the police or the parents (unlike in the recently seen Rosewood Lane); this allows keeping us immersed in the small group of friends.
I was a bit disappointed by what happens 20 minutes before the end, but all in all It Follows reached its goal or making the viewer paranoid about people walking towards them (the camera), at least during the 100 minutes of the movie.
Rating: 8 /10

  1. All the classical ingredients of the North American Horror movie are put together. Therefore not much surprise: teenagers and young adults, sex, sexy girls, final mansion (swimming pool). There are some "bouh" effects that are surprising but do not show horror and other that do. All of them are accompanied by a good sound effect / music written and performed by Rich Vreeland that awakes in me an effect as the "tata tata" in Jaws. This is the highlight if the movie.

The acting is good for that kind of movie (classical North American Horror).
Actually I do not understand why the poster and ads for the movie claim that it is "Striking American Horror".

    My Rating would be 5/10
