Review: Simon Rumley is at the forefront of genre movies originating from and shot in Texas. I liked his crude Red, White & Blue and could recognize the same style in Fashionista. The movie looks like it was shot with a cheap equipment, the actors are not top models and the sets minimalistic, but this does not prevent Rumley to tell his story, on the contrary. I liked how the movie started, with this simple couple living in an apartment over-crowded with bags and boxes of clothes. I also liked the introduction of the bad things happening in April's life (cheating husband) and how she copes with them (starting an unhealthy relationship with a rich boy). And the way she handles clothes is also shown in a very clever way. But then it lost me by becoming too experimental: light, music, shots, people's reactions, absence of dialogs... and I felt that lasted too long. But the very last minutes of the movie manage to save it, unfortunately a bit too late, as you realize its true message finally spelled out loud: it was a movie about addiction. From Texas I preferred Cold in July or last year's excellent The Devil's Candy. |
