Review: This opening movie to the Gerardmer Fantastic Film Festival 2016 (23rd edition) was introduced by its director and he immediately justified his choice of making yet another Frankenstein movie: it was in order to show this classic story from the point of view of the monster, in addition to setting it in a modern world. I liked the way the classical elements of Mary Shelley's book are re-used throughout this Frankenstein: Victor the creator, here accompanied by a wife adding an interesting layer to the monster's behavior, the superhuman strength, the discussions around whether this being is alive or not (does it have a soul?), his pain and frustration very well transmitted thanks to the chosen point of view, and even details like the mob of angry villagers! Add to that the suggested modern themes like 3D printing, and a generous amount of gore, and you get a very enjoyable movie. |
