One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

Also Known As: -
Year of first release: 1975
Director: Milos Forman (Amadeus, The People vs. Larry Flint)
Actors: Jack Nicholson (Easy Rider, Mars Attacks!), Louise Fletcher, Christopher L. Lloyd (Back to the Future 1-3, Piranha 3D), Danny DeVito (Twins), Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings 2-3)
Country: USA
Genre: Drama
Conditions of visioning: 26.02.2013, Blu-ray, Home cinema
Synopsis: R.P. McMurphy is brought to a psychiatric ward for evaluation. Through him we will discover how is life in there.
Review: I had actually never seen this classic, that I thought had been directed by Stanley Kubrick! You spend most of the movie locked with the inmates, and I noticed that they were very often filmed from close-up and with a wide aperture, so that only the front of their face (eyes, mouths) were in focus, while already the ears and the whole background are blurred. This creates the desired effect of madness it seems.
Nicholson and Fletcher are of course brillant, but one can also notice other great performances: Christopher "Doc" Lloyd looks as crazy as in Back to the Future, I didn't recognize Danny DeVito since he plays so naturally, and Brad Dourif is also great in one of his first roles.
What is the best done in the movie for me is that it is very hard to tell what happens in  the mind of Nicholson's character. He never acts crazy but does some unreasonable things. He tries to escape the ward but then falls asleep next to the open window through which he could have fled. A very complex character indeed, and a very good movie based on atmosphere and character's performance.

  1. The performance of many actors is great. Milos Forman selected Jack Nicholson for his own character and personality. He did it right. This movie revealed many actors. In the DVD I watched last week, the outside pictures are not well filmed, but the focus and main point of the movie is really the acting.
