Review: I am not the biggest fan of Metal music nor of Metallica, but I like to listen to some once in a while, and especialy I wanted to see what Nimród Antal would do of this project, since I liked his Kontroll (Predators less so).
The most impressive has nothing to do with the movie, but it is the show itself that the band puts together. When you see them live (I saw them only at a festival), you really get value for your money: large scene, explosions, giant stuctures moving or getting destroyed, ligthning... Then I found that the 3D shooting of the concert scenes (actually 90% of the movie) was reflecting quite accurately the experience of being in the concert hall. The sound was good and the camera was always in motion just above the heads in the crowd. I found that the Madison Square Garden was fitting perfectly a 3D shooting, the wall of people in the stands offering a nice background to the band members in foreground.
The purpose of the "quest" around the movie eluded me and was not really interesting, although it provided a few spectacular moments (the crowd-control police hitting their shields at the rythm of the music, waw!).
Rating: 6 /10

  1. I found that the quest story and the concert story (it was really a story!) fitted very well together. The transitions from the one story to the other showed a perfect timing with the music and the picture, the kinda dissolve (fondu in French) from the crowd of barbarians and the public of the concert was huge! And also the mirroring of the actions (e.g. explosions in both stories) and story (story of the quest and lyrics of the songs). This had the drawback to let the quest story go in a quite random directions, with plenty of details that have been introduced and have finally no sense, or at least not clear to me (empty bag in the car? small puppet coming to life?). Finally a good impression of the movie, but a bit lacking of sense.

  2. Let's say the title "Through The Never" fits the movie pretty well... even though "Through The Nothing" or "Through The Whatever" would have worked better ;)
