Synopsis: The world after the nuclear apocalypse. Pale light lits the scenery of total destruction. The surviving humans vegetate in wet cellars under the nuclear winter. The professor (Bykov) still sees somewhere the dim light of a new and better future. The next generation starts the walk towards a new life. | |
Review: I wanted to watch the movie because it is sold as a reflection on the Tschernobyl accident in 1986 and the consequent fear for nuclear collapse. The style is the one of Tarkowskyi. Monotone voices. Long still life scenes. Off voice narrating the story a long part of the movie. The poetry of Tarkowskyi movies only is missing. The scenery is amazing. It feels like a complete city has been destroyed to shoot the movie. The army vehicles seem very realistic. These effects are striking. And obviously it is not fake or any special effect. The basis of the movie (story, scenery) are so amazing that it feels like a pity not to give it a better rythm by the action or by the dialogues or by the music. |
