Synopsis: In the 1790s, beautiful widow Lady Susan Vernon (Beckinsale), who has come to the estate of her in-laws to wait out colorful rumors about her dalliances circulating through polite society. Whilst there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica (Clark). | |
Review: Every couple of years British directors feel the need to shoot a story written by Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility. And this year again Jane Austen! When the story is so bad (I know that many people love it), it is not easy to save it. Beckinsale spells each word perfectly for the theater stage, while others just talk normally. This might be a mean to present her as manipulating and false. But to me the complete story and movie sounds false. Time to time there are absurd dialogues wihch absurdity is enhanced by the context that are taken so seriously that it becomes really funny, but I fear this was not the goal of the director. Nice try, but failed. It is a pity to see good actresses like Chloe Sevigny in this kind of feature. |
