Munich Fantasy Film Fest 2012 - what to watch?

Each year takes place in Munich (and other cities in Germany) the Fantasy Film Festival (FFF), a week of showing horror, thriller and science fiction movies:

This year it takes place from August 28th to September 5th, and I will give you here some recommendations of what you can go and see.

The complete list of films can be found here with their trailers:

The timetable for Munich (MFFF2012) can be downloaded from here:

The whole festival magazine can be found here ( ! 13 Mb ! ):

The movies will be shown in the CINEMA theater (Nymphenburger Str. 31, numbered seats) and in the CITY Kino (Sonnenstrasse 12, not numbered seats).
Usually all movies are shown in orginal version without subtitles, when the language is English ("Eng OV") and with English subtitles otherwise ("OMEU"). Sometimes subtitles are in German ("OMDU"). This is indicated in the timetable.

My recommendations are, in chronological order:
  • Sightseers (28/08 20:00): opening movie. A story of murders following a coupe of tourists in the british countryside. The director previously made Kill List which was the big success of the festivals last year.
  • God Bless America (29/08 19:15): In this comedy, a man with terminal cancer goes around with a young girl and shoots everybody that deserves it. The movie takes place in the USA of course.
  • Brake (30/08 17:00): The movie seems to revolve mostly around a man trapped in the trunk of a car and that will be forced to do something if he wants to get out alive. Probably inspired by the success if Buried.
  • Noobz (30/08 19:15): If you liked Clerks, you might like this cheap copycat.
  • Eva (31/08 17:00): Spanish movie about people trying to build a robot that can feel as a human. I heard some good about it.
  • Cockneys vs. Zombies (31/08 21:15): This looks like a copycat of Shaun of the Dead, but with more blood. Could be fun.
  • Starship Troopers: Invasion (31/08 23:30): 4th of the series, animated this time. As a fan of the first one, I must go.
  • Game of Werewolves  - Lobos de Arga (01/09 17:00): A spanish movie about werewolves in an isolated villages. I heard it is good.
  • At the same time is shown Sushi Girl (01/09 17:15): A classic revenge movie, Tarantino-style, with an impressive list of known faces: Tony Todd (Candyman), Sonny Chiba (Kill Bill), Dany Trejo (Machete), Michael Biehn (Aliens, Terminator, Planet Terror), Jeff Fahey (Machete), James Duvall (Donnie Darko), Andy MacKenzie (The Neverending Story), and last but not least Mark Hamill (THE Luke Skywalker) that is hard to recognize.
  • The suicide shop -  Le magasin des suicides - 3D (01/10 21:30): Animatied movie from the french director Patrice Leconte (Les bronzés). The trailer seems like fun, but the movie could also not be...
  • Get Shorty (02/09 15:00): a compilation of short movies is always nice.
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild (02/09 17:15): made a good impression at the Sundance Festival. It is about the adventures of a little girl in an isolated south of the USA (Lousiana) going back to prehistoric ages.
  • At the same time is shown The Awakening (02/09 17:15): Classic and good quality gothic movie about a haunted orphenage. I have seen it already.
  • Piranha - 3DD (02/09 21:30): If you liked the first one and want to see some more of those fishes eating siliconed babes in Bikini... and in 3D!
  • At the same time plays The Hidden Face (02/09 21:30) from Spain: A woman who wanted to spy her fiancé from behind the walls of a special house is trapped there. What will become of her?
  • Doomsday Book (03/09 19:15): An Korean Anthology (film a sketches) around the theme of humanoid robots in a not so distant future. But don't be mistaken, this is probably more a Drama or Comedy than Science-Fiction. I read that a few segments are very good.
  • The Possession (03/09 21:30): maybe the scariest movie of this edition. About the possession of a little girl by a demon. By producer Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man, Drag me to Hell) and excellent Danish director Ole Bornedal (Deliver Us from Evil).
  • At the same time is shown The King of Pigs (03/09 21:30): an korean animated movie about a kid being bullied in a high school. This is not a cartoon for kids, but more a serious movie about bullying.
  • Compliance (04/09 19:00) reminds me of Phone Booth: A man on the phone manages to convince influencable people to follow his orders...
  • The Baytown outlaws (05/09 21:15), closing movie, is about 3 bandits brothers.
Then if you are ready to take some risks, to watch some horror and/or to go watch movies at unreasonnable hours, you are welcome to join me to see for example V/H/S (28/08 22:15), Grabbers (29/08 21:30), Cleanskin (30/08 21:15), Columbus Circle (01/09 13:00), The Ghostmaker (03/09 23:45), Swith (04/09 13:00), Resolution (04/09 15:00), Beast (04/09 21:00) or Violet & Daisy (05/09 19:15).
