Dear Cinephiles,
JoRafCinema's newsletter is back after a summer break rather quiet in movie-watching. The sole event of July was the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) where we were present with Press accreditations. We have seen 13 movies there and the best were the Brunei Yasmine, the French camembert thriller P'tit Quinquin and the hilarious horror comedy What we do in the Shadows from New Zealand. An article about the festival is still to come.
We have watched the recent Begin again, Lucy, Transformers 4, Maps to the stars and The Lego Movie with mitigated feelings. However, we appreciated much more older classics such as Ivanovo detstvo (Ivan's Childhood) and Solaris both from Serguei Tarkowski, The Deer Hunter, Paris nous appartient, Fitzcarraldo, and Steven King's adaptation Salem's Lot.
We also enjoyed watching again movies that have made an impression on us in the past: M.A.I.D., a Thai movie discovered at the Far East Film Festival, David Lynch's masterpiece Lost Highway, and the exquisite From Dusk till Dawn.
A few short TV-series were on the programme: the animated Sherlock Holmes created by Hayao Miyazaki, Firefly by Josh Weadon and the associated movie Serenity.
This summer also saw us busy writing the article about JoRafCinema's second anniversary, presenting statistics about the 650+ movies reviewed during that period. And we have been preparing the Munich Fantasy Filmfest, taking place from September 8th to 18th.
Not such a quiet summer after all on JoRafCinema...
Jo&Raf
