Synopsis: The hate and love story between filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville during the filming of Psycho in 1959.
Review: The movie itself is intersting and Helen Miller plays her role greatly. The make-up of Antony Hopkins seems to have blocked his great acting competence. What a pity! The movie did not catch me, although I am a really big fan of Alfred. Well, actually, this gave me more motivation to watch Hitchcock movies again, not only Psycho, but Vertigo, Blackmail, North by Northwest, etc. As a good basis for the selection of his movies, I recommend the famous book: Le cinema selon Alfred Hitchcock/Mr. Hitchcock, wie haben Sie das gemacht? So you may see some of them soon.

You seem to confirm the not so good things I have read about this movie...
ReplyDeleteAs I have also watched many Hitchcock movies this year, I finally watched this one you have reviewed, on 14.08.2014 in HD VOD on my Home cinema. I find it oversimplistic to say that it is a love and hate story between him and his wife. I believe it deals more with the struggle of the most famous director of the time to find a challenging project, how he went where no-one expected him, produced the movie with his own money and created the huge hit we now know Psycho to be.
ReplyDeleteIn parallel, it is true that we get to know more about the character of the man, and the love relationship with his wife which for me only suffers a little hickup.
Anthony Hopkins wears indeed a thick makeup limiting his movements, but I think he nevertheless plays well Hitch who was not moving his head very much either because of his corpulence (have a loolk at a few interviews of him).
Contrarily to you, the movie Hitchcock made a good impression on me, and I liked in particular the parallel done between Hitch's struggle and the life of serial killer Ed Gein who inspired the story of Psycho. A few shots in the movie are remarkable, like the long travelling following the pipes leading to the famous shower, but other than than, it is also true that my affection for the movie comes more from the topic (and ehat a great end scene!) than from the quality of the movie itself. Thus my better but still mitigated rating of 6/10.
