Synopsis: Lee Chandler (Affleck) is an uncle obliged to return home to Manchester to care for his nephew Patrick (Hedges) after his brother Joe (Chandler) dies. Unknowing he is to be the guardian and struggles with the decision. Throughout the movie he recounts past memories that caused him to leave Manchester and distance himself from his past. | |
Review: The dilemma of Lee Chandler are shown over the whole movie. And the decision-making is as most of the people do, I guess. No decision and waiting to be forced to. The behaviour is also very common to try to forget or escape from disturbing situations. Escape from the home town, escape from the ex-wife, forget the terrible drama. And it does not mean to be asocial. It is therefore not an heroic behaviour in the classical sense, but it is still dramatic and suspenseful. The acting of Casey Affleck is excellent. Very different reactions and emotions. But in fact quite speechless. This makes his acting even more subtle. The other Lucas Hedges and Kyle Chandler are the men acting a bit like Lee. Michelle Williams plays Lee's wife, Randi Chandler, in a very dramatic way. She can do it very well, as already expericned in Wendy and Lucy or Blue Valentine. The cut is excellent and especially the fine alternating past life and modern life of Lee Chandler, alternating very emotional scenes and quite scenes, alternating images of family and images of solitude. |
