Far East Film Festival 2009

In preparation to the visit of JoRafCinema to the Far East Film Festival from April 25th to May 3rd (link), I wanted to share with you my experience of this film festival.
Fourth episode happened in 2009.

For this one, I must admit that I messed up with all my notes on the movies I have seen. So that I can only rely on my bare recall to remember which movies I have seen and how these were, except the couple of movies that let huge impressions, such as:

Love exposure, from Japan, an amazing movie that is fully reviewed there,
The forbidden door, from Indonesia, a thriller starting from one horrific idea to the next and making all this credible. The atmosphere is disturbing and really induces realistic fear to oppose this to the Bouh effects,
The story of the closestool, from China, drama showing a turn in the mentalities in the Maoist China leading to the capitalist/communist China that we know. The story is not so weird as the title sounds and the directing if very mature especially the composition of the picture,
Ip man, from Hong-Kong, the original action movie that inspired many other Ip man movies, such as Grand Master,
Best of times, from Thailand, a very authentic and subtle directing of love stories,
Departures, from Japan, a drama about the search for what is important in life, good directing even if a bt long, as often for Japanese movies.

Other movies that I remember but were not so marking to me:

My dear enemy, from South Korea, a fine road movie of a woman with his ex-husband,
Connected, from Hong-Kong, an action movie with the original plot of a polar that do not allow the main character to hang up the phone,
Coming soon, from Thailand, after which the movie-goers will first have to survive to the horror movies they watched...
Crush and blush, from South Korea, a fine black comedy with teachers and students,
The equation of love and death, from China, a drama with a good story and unfortunately not much rythm,
The good, the bad and the weird, from South Korea, a Western that I find boring whereas I love Spaghetti Westerns.

Other movies that I barely remember from the style point of view:

Rough cut, from South Korea, an action movie with street violence,
Takut: faces of fear, from Indonesia, a collection of 6 horror stories,
4BIA, from Thailand, another collection of horror stories,
Fiction, drama from Indonesia,
Scandal makers, a comedy from South Korea,
Fireball, an action movie from Thailand,
Yatterman, a superheroe movie from Japan.

Whether I forgot the movies because we had a good time in the festival. All the city offers plenty of nice places.

For the coming 2014, we will make as for all the Film Festivals where JoRafCinema has been present since its creation in August 2012. All the movies that we have seen will be reviewed and presented in the JoRafCinema blog. It will be a pleasure to share our inclination to Asian movies.

  1. Ah, the famous Love Exposure that I refused to go watch for 4 hours on a sunny afternoon, and that then took me several yeras to find in DVD and finally watch, partially like, and review.
Yatterman by Takashi Miike is inspired by a comics book from which a TV-series is already derived (not very well known in France but famous in Italy). It includes the colorful and crazy style of the director in his biggest budget movie (I thnik to remember that), but as too often with Miike the movie was too long and contined only a few excellent scenes.
I liked a lot the efficient style of the first Ip Man. I have since watched the sequel and it was OK. We haven't seen the third movie yet. You have seen the Wong Kar Wai version The Grand Master and didn't like it so much.
I got the same feeling as you about The good, the bad and the weird. I have heard at that time about the collection of horror stories 4BIA, maybe I should watch it. Fireball was supposed to be in the line of the great Thai action films we had seen in the previous years, but ended beeing a very boring, very ugly basketball movie.
I think this is all I have seen on that year. Later on I have watched in Blu-ray Chocolate, a female kung-fu movie not really good. The Thai series of the Rathree movies is supposed to be good. I haven't seen Ong Bak 2 either but I know that the main actor Tony Jaa has retired to a monastry after the third movie, disgusted by the whole cinema industry.
Now looking forward to the article about the FEFF 2011 which is the latest one I attended. And of course looking forward to FEFF 2014!
