Best of cinema by Mad Movies. Part 1: 1998-2001

Every year my favorite magazine for action/horror/thriller/SF (Mad Movies) publishes the list of the best movies of the previous year (and the worst ones), according to its editors and an average for the whole magazine team.
I have gathered them for your here with a few comments. Enjoy
All parts of this article can be found under this link.

The first one I could find dates from back in 1998. I like the movies from that year: Vampires (John Carpenter rules), Dark City (became a classic), Starship Troopers (one of my favorite movies), Blade, Gattaca. Some nice to watch: Wishmaster (a renewal in the slasher genre? turned out that no), Halloween 20 years later, Sphere, Armageddon (aaaah, to 90's!).
1999 and the revolutionary Matrix of course! I also liked Faculty, The 13th Warrior (still looking forward to watch the extended edition in Blu-ray), the Mummy (aaaah, the 90's!!), Bride of Chucky, Being John Malkovitch, Pleasantville (watched only recently), Babe (for the child in me). Dissapointements from that year: The End of Times, Wild Wild West and Star Wars Episode 1, although I kind of liked it at the time.
The turn of the millenium has seen some nice B-movies: Red Planet (better for me than Mission to Mars), Hollow Man (Paul Verhoeven), Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, Pitch Black (with Vin "Riddick" Diesel, special mention to this one that I liked a lot), Deep Blue (for the killer sharks and the spectaculer death of Samuel L. Jackson), Toy Story 2 and X-men (starting a wave of 10+ years of super-hero movies ). I have recently watched The Bicentenial Man, after reading the novel from Asimov and I liked it, partly because of the good performance by Robin Williams. Princess Mononoke is maybe the best Miyasaki for me. I notice that Stir of Echoes (Hypnose in France) is completely absent from the list, althought I like it a lot and I found Kevin Bacon to play great in it (I just bought the Blu-ray).
It seems like in 2001 The Fellowship of the Ring has eclipsed all competition. I liked the B-movies Jurassik Park 3, Ghosts of Mars (John Carpenter of course), Dracula 2001 and Replicant (some say it is the best recent Jean-Claude Van Damme movie). The original Ring and The Others both scared me. Battle Royale was OK. I have recently watched A.I. in Blu-ray and it was not bad, if you like Spielberg. Even if not really a Mad Movie, Requiem for a Dream was a shock.
Stay tuned for the next episode, Part 2: 2002-2005.
