Nippon Connection 2020 - Day 4

In lieu of event on this fourth day of the Nippon Connection Festival, I watched a collection of short films directed by women and gathered under the title Constant Metamorphosis – Independent Animated Shorts By Women.
Here is the listing of the movies included in this collection:

Title Directors Year Duration
Deep-Sea’s Rainbow Makiko SUKIKARA 2019 11 Min.
While The Crow Weeps Makiko SUKIKARA 2013 8 Min.
Wild Pear Makiko SUKIKARA 2011 9 Min.
Shimizu Bonno „Shara Bon Bon“ Yoko YUKI 2019 2 Min.
A Snowflake Into The Night Yoko YUKI 2018 6 Min.
100percentElectrical Yoko YUKI 2016 15 Min.
Mimi Lisa FUKAYA 2018 4 Min.
Rabbit Tales Lisa FUKAYA 2016 3 Min.
Rabbit’s Blood Sarina NIHEI 2017 5 Min.
Small People With Hats Sarina NIHEI 2014 7 Min.
Trifling Habits Sarina NIHEI 2013 3 Min.
LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP Sarina NIHEI 2012 3 Min.

My favorite of the lot is by far the first one: Deep-Sea's Rainbow, which title card you can see above, as well as some extracts below. It is about the fight/love between two sea giants and the resulting offspring. The background is always black like the deep sea or the deep sky, and the images on top of it are wonderful blue, oranges and purples, with quasi-astronomical patterns. I found it beautiful and very poetic.
I also liked the two other shorts by Makiko SUKIKARA for their topic and style. Note that all deal with Nature and animals and to some discreet extend, death.
Yoko YUKI has a more flashy and epileptic style, which made Shimizu Bonno „Shara Bon Bon“ OK because it was very short, A Snowflake Into The Night quite nice in fact (also dealing with Shintoism topics of Nature and animals), but 100percentElectrical unwatchable. I hated it.
Lisa FUKAYA and Sarina NIHEI have humans in their shorts, and/or anthropomorphic animals, and I notice that it is one of the reasons for which I liked them less. Also they apparently look like their could be made for children, while in fact they heavily deal with the topic of Death and use some chocking imagery. All good looking, but too confusing for my taste.

The film of the day which I was alone to watch is the drama/romance Me and my Brother's Mistress, about a teenage girl who finds out that her soon-to-be-married brother has a mistress.
Here are my impressions on this fourth day, followed by images from the movie:

See you tomorrow!
