Review: Many styles are mixed in this pot-pourri of 50s Hollywood cinema, having musical scenes, epic scenes, etc. All played as a take in the take. This aspect is funny. Also the link to communists that make the stereotypes on communist moles ridiculous and laughable. Otherwise there is not much what captivated my attention. Many stars acting well their roles, many winks to their own caricatures.
To me this movie appears quite self-centred on Hollywood. And thus not much interesting to me.
Rating: 4 /10

  1. I saw the movie on 23.06.2016 on an inflight entertainment system (6" screen).
It seems that the Coen brothers movies take place in more and more specialised universes. I like that aspect from this movie because I find it interesting to see the back (dark) side of this industry in its golden age. Actors are dumb, relationships are arranged, newspapers are fed lies. The group that kidnaps Whitlock puts a little disorder into that well-oiled machine.
But I didn't like so much the pace or the useless intermissions which I would usually praise in the style of the duo of directors. Dialogs are crispy as usual, and delivered by colorful characters played by solid actors, but the magic didn't operate on me this time. Well to say the truth it hasn't operated in a while, maybe not since Burn after Reading, which was already on the descending for me after they reached the heights with The big Lebowski.
My rating would also be 4/10.
