Dear Cinephiles,
In June we had a lot to report on the FANTASPOA fantasy film festival that took place in Porto Alegre, Brasil. A summary article is still due. The best new movies seen there were Dave Made a Maze for its original plot with a lot of creativity, the latest crazy political Animated by Bill Plympton Revengeance, the 80's nostalgic Beyond the Gates and the Hungarian time-loop Mystery Hurok. We also liked The Master Cleanse a surprising Fantasy with Johnny "The Big Bang Theory" Galecki, Camera Obscura a horrific thriller turning around the world of photography and some more! The programming was definitely of high quality. In the retrospectives we loved watching for the first time the 1992 Poison Ivy, a sensual drama on a sinful teenage girl (played by Drew Barrymore) and re-discovering I Married a Strange Person!, Bill Plympton's classical Animated with corrosive humor.
We also continued reporting on the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy and from this Festival and other sources in June the following are definitely recommended as excellent movies: the Italian family Drama Veloce come il vento, the Japanese extravagant romance Over the Fence and the excellent French action futuristic movie Ares.
Other movies are remarkable for their originality or some dramatic aspects: Frequency, a family drama around a lost father, the realistic series on space exploration MARS, Born to be blue for the emotional acting of Ethan Hawke as Chet Baker, and Split a Korean thriller in the world of bowling.
Have a good cinematographic Summer!!!
